Intern Stories

Below are just a few examples of the great experiences our former interns have had in the program.

"I had never been exposed to research until I was an intern for LHSI.  My mentor showed me the ins and outs of research and taught me what it takes to succeed in the field!  My experience with LHSI has affected my career in so many ways.  First, after my internship I decided that I really wanted to do research, so I did an honors capstone in psychology my senior year and I also was hired by my mentor as a research assistant.  Furthermore, I am currently in graduate school and will eventually have a doctorate degree where I plan to continue doing research."

"I never realized that I possessed the capacity to perform research. This entire experience has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and explore areas of academia that were otherwise foreign to me. As a result, I feel that I have developed an interest in research and it perhaps will be an activity that I pursue throughout my medical education. (My mentor) has also served as a mentor to me in activities outside of research. She has offered advice about coursework, the MCAT, medical school selection, and much more. I have a hard time imagining what I would be doing had I not met her.

I would say one of my most memorable experiences during my LHSI internship is when I traveled to New York, NY to present my poster at the LWPES/ESPE conference.  Although she was presenting a different poster, it was great to be able to spend time with my mentor outside the academic setting.  It was neat to be able to network with other professionals from across the globe."

Jenna with her mentor Dr. Kacena    "When I started LHSI I was planning on pursuing an
MD/PhD.  I knew I loved research and discovery but I
also had a strong  desire to help people in a more direct
way as a physician. My  time in Dr. Kacena's lab both
strengthened my passion for  research and helped me
refine what I wanted to do with my  career. Working in a
medical research lab actually  strengthened my personal
moral code and motivated me to  pursue research that
protects wildlife and doesn't require  animal sacrifice. I
now plan to attend a PhD program in  ecology or
conservation biology so I can help people indirectly,  by
helping the world we live in."
